Story: The new posting of a young IPS officer in rural India led him to face caste inequalities and inconvenient truths in the face of a gruesome crime. When three girls go missing in the fictional village of Lalgaon, two of them are found dead and the third is not found. Where is he and who is responsible for this heinous act?

Review: When Ayan Ranjan (Ayushman Khurana), an IPS officer of the city, is given charge of the Lalgaon police station in India’s heartland, he soon learns that he will have to face far more than meets the eye. Early in the film, he told his wife Aditi (Isha Talwar) on the phone, “It’s like the Wild Wild West.” After studying at St. Stephens, Delhi and having lived in Europe before that, Ayan clearly has. Lalgaon is full of mindset to reveal it with the right word. Even as he struggles with the strong presence of caste discrimination and social disparities, he stumbles upon the news of three girls working in a local factory who have been missing for the past two days.

His associates, Bhramadatta and the Jatavs (Manoj Pahwa and Kumud Mishra) tell him that all possibilities will change. But the next morning, when two of them are found hanging from the tree, it confirms that something has gone horribly wrong.

However, there is relentless pressure to close the case as soon as possible. Pahwa’s character says, “You have been transferred to Logan, we are yours”, as she tries to convince Ayan to sign the case file.

As a police officer in command, Ayan is committed to getting to the bottom of this, refusing to buckle despite obstacles and threats in almost every corner.

Anubhav Sinha’s ‘Article 15’ has been made like a crime thriller. And the work it does for the film is that it is provocative, exposing burning social issues in a tremendous way.

The film is heavy on atmospheres, top notch cinematography (Evan Mulligan) and background marks adding to the mood. The feeling is severe, gritty, and gray, which often chills the bone with an often tense tension in the air. Picture – Some provocative and uncomfortable stands outside, such as where a man goes deep into a rivulet to provoke him and soak in the dirt, or spot the top shot of a group of policemen in the swamp with his flashlight. The dialogues leave an impact. And the director brings out subtle nuances through his characters and settings that add to the essence of the narrative. The film’s story, full of powerful and poignant moments, leaves you with a goon. The narrative definitely puts you over the edge, but there are times when it feels overdusted as the layers, a multitude of political intricacies and characters come in and at times lose momentum.

But of course, the performance by an ace set of actors is one of the film’s high points. Ayushmann Khurrana has instantly hooked you, giving a terrific performance as a sincerely tenacious police officer. It is an intense, entertaining act as he gets under the skin of his character. Other notable scene evaders include actors Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub as Nishad.

‘Article 15’ is not a light watch, but it is certainly relevant, compelling and a film that will promote dialogue.
